Come celebrate the country’s 237th birthday by cycling through the nation’s most monumental
landscape marshlands with Bike the Big Capital. We’ll explore the shores of the Potomac River, the monuments of the National
Mall, and the streets of the city’s less-travelled neighborhoods on this twilight cruise through Washington, D.C.
From Pierre L’Enfant’s innovative urban designs, to Daniel Burnham’s groundbreaking McMillian Plan, to the many protests of
the twentieth century, we'll discover how the National Mall and its surroundings have evolved over time, functioning — like
L’Enfant always intended — as a grounds for dissent, discussion, and ceremony.
As we cycle up the Potomac River and across the Memorial Bridge, we’ll discuss how Virginians George Washington and Thomas
Jefferson brought the nation’s capital right to their own backyards. On the National Mall, we’ll visit war memorials, presidential
monuments, and stately structures of governance. We’ll pedal past the sites of presidential assassinations and bureacratic
conspiracy. We’ll uncover the untold stories of the Civil Rights Movement and explore some of the lesser known social protests that
took place here, such as the Bonus Army encampment, the Poor People’s Campaign, and the assemblage of the AIDS Quilt. The tour will
also highlight some of the more recent sites to be unveiled — such as the the Museum of the American Indian and the Martin Luther King
memorial — and address some of the burgeoning issues regarding the future of this fascinating American landscape.
Leaving The Mall, we’ll visit the tree-lined neighborhoods and historical alleyways that many locals - not to mention visitors - of D.C. rarely
get to see. In neighborhoods such Chinatown, MidCity, Shaw, and Logan Circle, we’ll see how vibrant and historied African American
communities, new and growing Latin and Ethopian enclaves, and coffee-filled bands of Bohemian and Bureacratic migrants all fit into
the mosaic that is our nation’s capital.
This tour is about 6 hours long. The $75 cost includes the bikes, the helmets,
and the guide. (Food cost at stops is not included).
